  A Truly Happy Life

Chan is learning to practice wisdom. What we call “Chan (Zen)” means not to be confused about cause and effect, to know the cause and to know the effect, and to know them in our own life. Not to be confused about cause and effect means to do the right thing with full understanding and clarity. In other words, the practice of Chan means understanding and clarity. Chan means finding our True Self, and having found it, to embrace everything with compassion. Can you find any truly enlightened Chan Teacher who would not be like this? To enlighten oneself means to completely drop the self, practice compassion, and live one’s entire life serving others. Therefore we can also say that Chan is the contemplation in which we contemplate ourselves and then dedicate ourselves even more to others, serving others even more. This is the practice of enlightening self and others.

Once we have a breakthrough in our contemplation, we come understand the principle of life itself. That principle has been right there from the beginning, except that we had never noticed it. Therefore we need a method to allow this principle to come into the open. Once we become enlightened we can truly live life. This is a life lived both for oneself and for all beings, a life that is truly rich and prolific.

What is the secret of truly happy people? It is serving others. Selfishness will never make us happy – only a heart full of love will do so. Without a heart of love we will never find the joy of life. The principle of happiness therefore is lovingkindness. Lovingkindness means compassion and service. Our happiness comes from realizing what we are and what others are. If therefore we want to find the meaning of life, we need to find our original face. Once we have found it, we have found the meaning of life. Then we will realize that we are like this, and that others are like this too. Happiness therefore is realizing oneself and serving others.
